The Z-Pipe by Formula Z Performance is an innovative, patent-pending dual-exhaust crossover designed as a superior replacement for a traditional X-pipe or H-pipe. Originally developed in 2017 and refined over time, the Z-Pipe is engineered to improve exhaust flow, increase scavenging, reduce turbulence, and create a cleaner, crisper, higher-pitched exhaust note.
The Z-Pipe is manufactured using advanced DMLS / SLM metal 3D printing in high-quality 316L stainless steel. This manufacturing process allows the creation of an extremely compact and highly precise internal geometry that would be difficult or impossible to produce using traditional fabrication methods. The result is a crossover compact enough for tight exhaust packaging while still optimized for smooth, high-velocity exhaust flow.
The Z-Pipe works by forcing a true mixture between both exhaust banks. Instead of allowing the two banks to simply crash into each other like a conventional X-pipe, the Z-Pipe splits and smoothly recombines flow from each side. This balanced exchange helps exhaust pulses work together, creating a stronger scavenging effect. Scavenging utilizes the low-pressure area behind one exhaust pulse to help pull the next pulse through the system, improving volumetric efficiency and increasing overall power and torque potential.
At the same time, the Z-Pipe maintains a consistent, unrestricted flow path with zero cross-sectional reduction. This helps maintain high exhaust gas velocity while minimizing backpressure. By comparison, many traditional X-pipes create a reduction in effective flow area along with a larger crossover chamber where exhaust velocity decreases and turbulence increases significantly.

The Porsche 991.2 Carrera generation — including Carrera, Carrera S, Carrera 4, Carrera 4S, and Cabriolet models — was produced from late 2015 through late 2019.
