316L STAINLESS TUBE FOR MARINE EXHAUST & SANITARY SYSTEMS

PNW Sanitary 316L Stainless Steel Tubing is built for applications where corrosion resistance matters most. The molybdenum in 316L gives it substantially better resistance to chlorides and saltwater than 304 stainless, making it the material of choice for marine exhaust systems and any fabrication exposed to salt spray, seawater, or condensing exhaust gases. The low-carbon "L" grade limits carbide precipitation in the weld zone, helping the tube hold its corrosion resistance after welding.

MARINE EXHAUST APPLICATIONS

Marine exhaust is one of the harshest environments for stainless. Raw-water cooled systems inject seawater into the exhaust stream, creating hot, wet, chloride-rich conditions that cause pitting and crevice corrosion in lesser alloys. 316L is the long-standing standard for these systems because it holds up where 304 can pit and fail. Typical uses include:

  • Wet exhaust systems and water-injected exhaust sections
  • Exhaust risers, elbows, and mixing sections
  • Dry exhaust stacks and exhaust tips on diesel inboards
  • Marine generator exhaust
  • Exhaust hangers, brackets, and other topside fabrication exposed to salt spray

The polished OD and ID surface is smoother and less prone to holding salt deposits and contaminants than mill finish tube, giving corrosion less of a foothold.

SANITARY APPLICATIONS

The same tube is manufactured to ASTM A270 and is 3-A Certified, with a 32Ra polished finish suited to clean-in-place (CIP) systems. It is used throughout food, beverage, brewing, dairy, and other sanitary process lines, and is dimensionally compatible with standard sanitary ferrules, clamps, and butt-weld fittings.

FEATURES:

  • 316L Stainless Steel (low-carbon, molybdenum-bearing)
  • Greater resistance to saltwater and chloride corrosion than 304
  • ASTM A270 sanitary tube; 3-A Certified
  • Polished OD & ID (32Ra)
  • 4-foot lengths with no cutting charges or broken box fees

FABRICATION TIPS: For the best corrosion resistance in marine service, weld with 316L filler and back-purge with argon to protect the inside of the weld. Removing heat tint and passivating finished welds helps restore the protective surface layer.

BUILD A COMPLETE 316L SYSTEM: Pair this tube with our 316L Stainless Mandrel Bends, 316L Transition Reducers, and 316L Butt-Weld Tees.
