About ASTM A270 Material
Wall Thickness: The wall thickness specifications, per the ASTM A270 (12.2) specification, states that the wall thickness of 16 gauge tube shall not vary more than 12.5%± from the specified wall thickness. For example, 16ga wall thickness is specified as 0.065"; however, the wall thickness can actually vary between 0.0569" and 0.0731" and the material is still considered to be within the tolerances of the specification.
Weight per Foot: While the wall thickness can vary by up to 12.5% on ASTM A270 sanitary tube you might be left wondering what will happen to the weight of the material per foot.

- Finish: Our 304L stainless tube is manufactured to the stringent ASTM A270 specifications. ASTM A270 spec tubing is mechanically polished on both the OD and ID of the tube with Ra (roughness average) values of 30µ-in Ra (0.8µm) and 20 µ-in Ra (0.5µm) respectively, per ASME/ANSI B46.1.
What is Tube and How is it Different from Pipe?
Tube size material is measured by the actual outside diameter (OD) and wall thickness. Whereas, Nominal Pipe Size (NPS) is an industry designation, or "trade size", and it is does not reference the actual measured size of the material. Even the most experienced fabricators are sometimes confused by the industry's terminology and method of sizing. Tube size material is not compatible with pipe size material. Many times the words "pipe" and "tube" are use to describe straight lengths of material (eg: exhaust "piping"); however, the industry standard term for this material is "tube".
Note: Please be sure to verify that this tube size material meets the requirements of your project. It is the customer's responsibility to verify the compatibility of the items in their shopping cart. Ace Race Parts is not responsible for orders with mismatched or incompatible products.
